Artist Statement
My name is Mike Mason. I make my art completely of botanicals. I use dried and pressed flowers, leaves, bark, moss, lichen, roots, seeds and pollen to create my “Botanical Impressionisms.”
I am a Portland Oregon native. I am a SFAI Graduate. I started working with the natural palette in 1990.
We saw these luggage tags as gift offerings at a museum in Kauai. Some grasses and tropical flowers pressed into clear plastic. I purchased the item and used it as a book mark.
I needed some cash to get some new gear for my band “The Weevils.” My parents were avid gardeners and I had saved so may floral specimens. Using the dried and preserved elements, I set to work on my first floral impressionism work of art. Well, it was really a hodge-podge at first. It was an idea that always stuck around. After two years or so I had really started something unique. Post cards started to become more formal compositions and I started showing in galleries in 2008. The images and technique continue to evolve with dimension being a continuing line of interest.
